Golden Exile is the stunning new album from Australian Roots/Alt. Country artist James Thomson. Based on the strength of the album’s two released singles, Golden Exile has already been ear-marked as ‘a contender for local album of the year’ – (Post To Wire). After recording two acclaimed albums, James Thomson (2013) and Cold Moon (2015) with producer Grant Shanahan (Perry Keyes, The Honeys, Bek-Jean Stewart), James made the decision to try a different setting for recording his third. In 2019, James recorded the nine tracks which make up Golden Exile with Roger Bergodaz (Neil Murray, Tex Perkins, Lost Ragas, Joel Silbersher) at Union Street Studios, Brunswick. The album was recorded over 6 days and features what are undoubtedly James’ finest songs to date, as well as performances by some of the country’s finest roots musicians including; Steve Hadley (Paul Kelly Band), Shane Riley (Lost Ragas, Tex Perkins Band), Sean McMahon, Ezra Lee and Tracy McNeil. James’ first two albums (released through Sydney-based independent label Laughing Outlaw Records), established his talent for writing authentic, high-quality folk, blues and country tinged songs. The follow up release Golden Exile finds the Newcastle, NSW based artist branching out into new styles and sounds, more purposeful arrangements and production ideas - without sacrificing the essential elements of Thomson’s celebrated songwriting style. The result is an album with a refreshingly assured identity, but one that also isn’t afraid to venture into the less frequented corners of Roots, Americana and Alt. Country. Golden
